Film critic and writer Kambole Campbell interrogates the work of director Ryan Coogler through his films Fruitvale Station, Creed, and Black Panther. Though these titles may seem quite different – one is an indie drama about police brutality, another is a reboot of a sports franchise, and the third is a Marvel blockbuster – there are themes which link his works. In this video essay, Campbell touches on topics including Black history, masculinity, and community, while also looking at filmmaking and stylistic elements such as the production design, costumes, and score of Black Panther, as well as the prowling camerawork and long-take set-pieces which can be found in all three films.
