Charlie Chaplin is arguably one of the most important figures in film history. From the makers of the acclaimed documentary ‘Notes on Blindness’, this creative new film dives into Chaplin’s rise to stardom, with extraordinary archival footage that captures the origins of his loveable on-screen comedy persona, the Tramp, which generated worldwide fanatical ‘Chaplin fever’. Ethereal voices from past times are brought to life in this documentary through reenactments, in which actors lip-sync to old audio recordings in a quest to unearth the real man behind the silent slapstick. The film also draws attention to the people in Chaplin’s life whose voices were lost or dismissed, namely his four young wives. This documentary offers young Chaplin fans and film students a deeper insight into how the star was affected by cinema’s evolution from silent film to talkies, as well as how 20th Century politics shaped the industry.
