This French animation is loosely based on the story of frontierswoman Martha Jane Cannary, famously known as Calamity Jane. Set in 1863, the film follows the young Martha as she travels with her father and sisters as part of a caravan across the American West to Oregon. When her father is injured, Martha steps forward to take over his role, but her plan is rejected by the group leader Abraham who believes only a boy should lead a carriage, assigning his son Ethan the task instead. To prove that she can do it, Martha trains secretly and decides to cut her hair and wear trousers to disguise herself as a boy– something hugely taboo during this time. As tension rises among the group, Martha runs away and encounters a series of characters that encourage her abilities and strength. This charming film is a great introduction to the western genre and touches on themes of female empowerment and growing up.
