Synopsis

Fatphobia, the discrimination and prejudice expressed against fat bodies that do not meet society’s standards of beauty, can be seen in many aspects of everyday life. This celebratory short visual essay takes a close look at how fat women in particular are depicted on screen. Firstly investigating how fat people have historically been represented in film as lazy, undesirable or as the butt of the joke, the essay moves on to salute positive and diverse depictions of fat female bodies as well as the actresses who played them. Bringing together an array of joyful clips from both mainstream and independent titles, this short film is a valuable tool with which to discuss how popular media affects our view of our and other’s bodies.

What our educators say

"We are currently screening The Wizard of Oz, profound film that it is, and the last film Wall-E. It's been rewarding observing the KS1 6 year olds run the gamut of emotions from wonder to sadness to joy. "
