In 1957, a 17-year-old girl from Tennessee went to see her first live rock-and-roll band. Just weeks later, she was performing with that same band and soon she would marry its frontman Ike, thus becoming Tina Turner. In this engrossing documentary looking back on her life and career, Tina’s volcanic energy and earth-shaking vocals are powerfully illustrated through footage of her performances and interviews with those who witnessed her incandescent stage presence. But off the stage, Tina suffered appalling domestic abuse at the hands of her husband. The film follows how she escaped that marriage and examines the immense drive and work ethic that saw her rebuild her career. Publicly sharing her painful personal story was groundbreaking, as were her sell-out concerts in stadiums worldwide throughout the 80s and 90s, a first for a black female rockstar. The documentary captures the singer’s final reflections on her own life, which came to an end two years after the film’s release.
