Synopsis
As of April 2022, British Sign Language (BSL) has been officially recognised in law. Actress Rose Ayling-Ellis presents a powerful and personal documentary exploring the deaf experience and highlighting the creativity and expressiveness of BSL. Following her breakout role as the first regular deaf character in ‘EastEnders’, Rose went on to win ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, bringing greater awareness to deaf identities and inclusion. In this film, Rose meets key figures in the deaf community, including MP Rosie Cooper and sign language experts, and reflects on her own upbringing as she meets other families who are campaigning for better BSL access. Advances in technology and speech therapy also have a role to play, but do these overshadow the value of sign language? And Rose prepares to perform and sign on stage in Shakespeare’s ‘As You Like It’, is society evolving fast enough to embrace true equality?
