Being the son of an African slave and a white French slaveowner in the 1700s, not much was expected of Joseph Bologne. However, when his father notices Joseph’s skills in music, dancing and fencing, he sends him to boarding school in Paris where his natural talents can flourish. Rubbing shoulders with famous composers and showcasing an undeniable and extraordinary talent with the violin, Jospeh is nevertheless bullied and ridiculed by his peers for the colour of his skin and background. Despite this, Jospeh rises to the upper echelons of French society, ultimately becoming embroiled in a romantic relationship with a woman of repute that could spell tragedy for both of them. Inspiring and fascinating in its exploration of historical attitudes towards art and race, this US biopic aims to raise the profile of a pioneer who broke boundaries in both music and society.
