Oscar Wilde’s witty satire about Victorian society is brought to the stage in an extravagant National Theatre production, rendered even more vivid and dynamic in this live recording. The story centres around two men, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, who invent alter egos to escape their social obligations. Jack poses as ‘Ernest’ to court Gwendolen, while Algernon takes on the false identity of ‘Bunbury’ with plans to woo Cecily, who is Jack’s ward. Their deceptions unravel when both women insist that they can only love a man named Ernest. Chaos ensues with mistaken identities, romantic entanglements, with Gwendolen’s formidable and imposing mother, Lady Bracknell, posing yet another obstacle. Will love triumph? Wilde’s play skewers social conventions with sharp humour and dazzling wordplay.
