Raw and emotional, Tennessee Williams’s most famous play stands the test of time on stage at the National Theatre, captured in this live recording that transmits all the tension of the pressure-cooker apartment where the story takes place. Blanche DuBois, a fragile and fading Southern belle, arrives at her sister Stella’s modest New Orleans home seeking refuge. Tensions rise as Blanche clashes with Stella’s brutish husband, Stanley Kowalski, whose suspicion and aggression unravel Blanche’s secrets and mental stability. As Blanche’s illusions crumble and Stanley’s dominance intensifies, Stella becomes increasingly torn between loyalty and love, culminating in a traumatic confrontation. The play explores themes of toxic relationships, class conflict, mental illness, and attitudes towards age and gender. Gillian Anderson’s performance as Blanche has been praised as one of the most striking and visceral renditions of this role in modern productions.
