During the Second World War, the Nazis referred to the land surrounding the Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp as ‘the zone of interest’. This name takes on an unsettling secondary meaning in this haunting film inspired by real events. The film follows the idyllic home life of German SS officer Rudolf Höss, whose large house and beautiful garden are tended by his entitled and proud wife Hedwig and enjoyed by their seemingly oblivious children. Just beyond their walls, however, lies the camp where unimaginable horrors are taking place – overseen by Höss. Rather than showing events inside the camp, the film focuses on the chilling contrast between the family’s everyday routines and the violence they choose to ignore. With its haunting sound design and restrained visuals, The Zone of Interest encourages audiences to think about complicity, morality, and the ways people can distance themselves from the suffering of others.
Holocaust theme, disturbing scenes, racism, moderate sex references
