In this melodrama, a group of nuns attempt to set up a school and hospital in an old building on top of a mountain in the Himalayas. Their leader, Sister Clodagh, has never been in a position of authority before, and struggles to keep control in the face of natural disasters, as well as her repressed passions inspired by Dean, the English agent of the local ruler. The women are torn between the spiritual and the physical - leading to turmoil, and even madness. Hugely controversial at the time of release, the film remains provocative to this day. From iconic British directors Powell and Pressburger, the film contains lavish production values and cinematography that continue to impress.
