Celine and Julie are two young women living in Paris with vivid imaginations. In this odd, almost hypnotic film it is never quite clear - either to them or to us - where the stories they tell (the main one involving a haunted house and mysterious sweets that turn memories on and off) come to an end and real life begins. At times, it's rather like a grown-up version of Alice In Wonderland, with something strange lurking around every corner. This self-referential classic is one of the defining films of post war French cinema and will reward those patient enough to take on its lengthy running time.
Czech master of surreal animation Jan Svankmajer brings his dark talents to a magically creepy, loose adaptation of Lewis Carroll's loopy fantasy.
