Drama, War Films
Czech (English subtitles)
The winner of an Oscar for Best Foreign Film, Czech director Jiri Menzel's Closely Observed Trains is widely regarded as one of the greatest films to have come from Eastern Europe during the era of the Cold War. The affectionately told tale of an innocent railway apprentice in German-occupied Czechoslovakia during World War II, it follows his various adventures as he ponders joining the organised Resistance to the Nazis, while becoming ever-more obsessed with the idea of losing his virginity. This is a dark and delightfully subversive black comedy.
