Some films rely on hyperactive plots to keep you interested, but Days Of Heaven proves that a film that drifts along can be just as fascinating, at least when it's filmed with the skill that director Terence Malick shows here. The story is set in the US in 1916, where a man on the run for murder and his girlfriend end up working on the land of a rich, aging farmer and start planning how they can get his money. But although the film resembles a crime drama in places, it's a moody, memorable and heartfelt experience that isn't easy to categorise, and is all the better for being so unique. The haunting visuals are some of the most memorable you are likely to see in a film.
Daniel Day Lewis gives an unforgettable performance as an increasingly alienated oil prospector in the America of the 1900s.
