A woman is forced to go on the run with a young boy in this cracking thriller from director John Cassavetes. Generally speaking, Gloria doesn't like kids - but she reluctantly takes care of eight-year-old Philip after his family is gunned down by the Mob. That's only the beginning of the story though, as Philip has incriminating evidence that the gang will kill for, prompting a desperate chase across New York. The odd-couple partnership works superbly, and the way in which Rowlands' tough, middle-aged character warms to the boy is convincingly staged.
A raw drama that challenges us to look at our own ideas of what it means to be sane.
