You could probably get a couple of years' worth of soap-opera plots from Magnificent Obsession - a movie in which, having indirectly caused a man's death, a rich young playboy then falls in love with his widow, and later becomes a doctor to try to cure her blindness. And that's really only the beginning - but this beautifully made film manages to make all its wild plot twists and weird philosophical theories (which the director himself thought were ridiculous) seem perfectly logical, and the result is a truly heartbreaking affair.
Glossy melodrama from director Douglas Sirk about two single mothers - one black, and one white - facing prejudice in the pre-civil-rights-era US.
