Synopsis

Drifter Frank Chambers rolls up to a nowheresville diner and ends up getting a job there. He quickly becomes lovers with the owner's sultry wife, Cora, who is bored of her staid older husband and wants to have the diner for herself. Soon, they decide murder is the way to get what they want - but their plan takes several unexpected twists. Sparks fly between the two leads John Garfield and Lana Turner in a film seen as a classic film noir but, unusually for the genre, one where the murderous protagonists are seen in a relatively sympathetic light, killing more for love than greed.

What our educators say

"Some of them saw a clip from Wakolda (The German Doctor) on TV recently and really wanted to watch it. So I thought I’d take a chance, not expecting them to watch the whole film but the majority were absolutely gripped. "
