Period and Historical
Growing up in the Sweden of the early 20th century, young Alexander Ekdahl and his younger sister Fanny have a happy life with their prosperous parents. But when their father dies suddenly and their mother gets remarried to a local bishop, things becomes much harder for the Ekdahl children - particularly Alexander, whose stepfather proves a brutal taskmaster. Unhappily bound to their new patriarch, the children retreat into fantasy and storytelling to brighten their gloomy home life, but this seems to get them into even greater trouble. This family drama from the great director Ingmar Bergman is among his finest films.
Shot over 12 years, Richard Linklater follows a boy from Austin as he grows from childhood to college age, in this laidback, poignant and unique epic.
