Mental disability is an issue that mainstream movies find hard to sell. The involving drama I Am Sam - starring an Oscar-nominated Sean Penn as a man with a mental age of seven thrown into the dilemma of trying to retain custody of his daughter (Dakota Fanning) - tries to break down these barriers and, to an extent, succeeds. The film admirably carries an uplifting message - all soundtracked to covers of songs by Sam's favourite band, The Beatles.
Beautiful account of John Merrick, a man with a severe physical deformity rescued from a cruel circus sideshow in Victorian London.
