Italian (English subtitles)
In Amarcord, Italian director Federico Fellini looks back on a childhood much like his own. But while semi-autobiographical films are often low-key and poignant in mood, Amarcord is a sprawling fantasy, with the day-to-day events of a small Italian town during the 1930s transformed into something grand, strange and beautiful. A midget nun, a huge ocean liner, characters speaking directly to the audience, and a bizarre fascist rally are a few of the elements that mean that although there is not much of plot, there is always something to watch here.
This powerful drama sees a child separated from his parents during the 1931 Japanese invasion of China and put in an internment camp for foreigners.
