Roy is a stuntman in 1920s Hollywood who is in hospital after attempting to impress an actress with a dangerous stunt. When there, though depressed and suicidal, he enraptures a young fellow patient, Alexandria with a series of fantastical tales about five legendary heroes who are seeking revenge on the evil Governor Odious. The film shifts between reality - with many of the hospital staff and patients becoming part of the story - and spectacular fantasy, reminiscent of films such as Pan's Labyrinth and The Wizard of Oz as Roy's tales are acted out in Alexandria's vivid imagination.
Outstanding fantasy grounded in a Spanish Civil War setting, about a girl who discovers a magical maze at her ruthless stepfather's remote army base.
