In this classic though lesser-known film noir, unassuming college professor Richard Wanley who becomes intrigued by the painting of a beautiful woman on display in a shop window. One day he unexpectedly meets the woman and they go to her apartment for an innocent drink, but when her boyfriend walks in on them he assumes the worst. A struggle follows and Wanley inadvertently kills him. The couple agree to cover up the crime, but Wanley soon finds himself caught in a web of blackmail, deceit and double crosses.
