This patriotic John Ford war movie is based on the real-life exploits of naval officers John Bulkeley and Robert Kelly. Here, two US Navy lieutenants battle to prove the value of their small torpedo boats to their superiors by defending the Phillippines from Japanese invasion. Released just after the war's end, this pays tribute to the heroism of those involved, matching gripping action sequences with tear-jerking scenes of bravery and sacrifice.
