This 2002 Japanese anime is a futuristic sci-fi spin on the Pinocchio tale in which a naive young robot made from the wood of the sacred tree of Palme must transport the precious Egg of Touto safely to the Land Below, learning along the way what it truly means to become human. Exquisitely drawn backgrounds and action that unfolds at a slow, thoughtful pace make this more of an art film than an action movie, but it's no less enchanting viewing for that.
This visually spectacular German sci-fi classic (made, incredibly, in 1927) sees the rich live in skyscrapers and the poor toil underground.
