Let me start by saying it is not often I am baffled by a film. In fact I rather pride myself on being able to unravel the layers a movie presents and read the sub texts however in this particular case I was lost. Synecdoche, New York is styled in such a way that time, reality and fantasy become blurred and what is left is a masterpiece. The film follows a almost dream like path similar to Paul Tomas Anderson's punch drunk love or Martin scorsese King of comedy what I mean by this is you question if the chain of events are actually occurring or just periods of delusions created by the protagonist. Philip Seymour Hoffman delivers one of his most memorable performances and it isn't surprising under direction from the genius of Charlie Kaufman who has clearly been influenced by David Lynch. The film poses many examples of symbolic imagery such as the fire in Hazels House which is open to many different interpretations. Synecdoche, New York is a difficult film to watch as you constantly having to evaluate what is meant by every frame, This may put many people off however in my case left me thinking about it days after watching joyfully trying to figure out its message but in the end is futile this movie is so multi layered and open to interpret that perhaps we will never know what it means and i thinks that's the point. In conclusion while this movie in no way shape or form a fun watch is a complex and beautiful mind boggling journey that wont leave you for days and for that is deserves five stars
