Serenity (2005)

Its got some laughs, Its got some action. This would make a great family film (with teenage kids) if it weren't a feature length "season finale." Although it had a surprisingly good conclusion to the Firefly Saga but I fear it would be unsuitable to anyone who wasn't a fan. Due to background info (described fairly well in the opening five minutes) the film is slightly confusing to someone who didn't follow the original series, which probably explains why it's Gross Revenue didn't even make it's budget by a close $130 000 (roughly.) Nevertheless this made a highly entertaining "space-western" as some call it, and I can see why (being a fan of the OLDER western myself). The movie has been clearly influenced by the Post-American Civil War period with Malcolm Reynolds as a man who fought for the Confederacy. And presumably the Reavers representing the Native Americans which I think depicts the "Indians" a little unfairly, although I suppose its typical to find that in a western. I understand that Whedon wanted to prove he could make the film for under a budget of $40 million but for the sake of CGI he should have spent a bit more than that! Serenity may have left a few strings untied and may have been better off as a second season but this movie made a good impact on the larger story without making a big deal out of some "tragedies" in the last half hour or so. I would recommend this to anyone into Sci-Fis; you will be pleased!
