Well, that's it. Twilight saga is finally over. Fans cried; haters sang a hymn of thanks; yet here I am having just watched it. And though I'll probably burned at the stake for saying so, I loved it.
Bella's a vampire. That pretty much sums up most of the plot. Bella's a vampire and she's got an animated kid. You'd think they'd attempt to make the baby more real but nope: it's as fake as the day is long. I think I've actually seen Doctor Who monsters more real than that baby (or 'it' as I like to call it). On top of that, Jacob falls in love with the baby and the fabulous Michael Sheen pulls some spectacularly funny faces as he decides to destroy the baby (not that there's a loss, it's made of megapixels anyway). One thing I did notice though was that Kristen really came alive in the role. You could tell she was enjoying herself immensely and it made it more fun to watch. In fact, a lot of the cast just seem so into their roles, it felt like their was no effort put in. It flowed really smoothly, or as smoothly as it could with a pretty abysmal script and some truly awful effects. Nevertheless, everyone is just having a great time.
As I said, it's far too much to look at. The effects are unspeakable and the novelty of a talking wolf likewise. It's B-movie quality all the way. So it may not be a masterpiece but my God, it is so fun to watch. I found it absolutely hilarious. Was it supposed to be? No. But honestly, if you saw Michael Sheen grinning madly and making a noise somewhere between a pregnant goose and Voldemort I'm pretty sure you'd be laughing too. The big battle in the middle is pretty awesome, maybe not quite Lord of the Rings awesome but obsessive ten year old nerd awesome. The acting is ridiculous, the fights are ridiculous, still very awesome.
The ending was okay. I think I would have liked it more if I actually cared that much about Twilight but I don't so this beautiful, moving finish was kind of wasted on me. Still, it was satisfying finale to a mediocre series. I gave this film three stars for the quality but it was a five star film at heart, the Plan 9 From Outer Space of the decade. Just a mad romp to enjoy rather than criticise.
Twilight has really evolved. It started dark and boring and teenage angsty. New Moon was really very depressing. Eclipse was okay, it at least had a little sense of humour. By Breaking Dawn Part 1, you could notice a change. The ice that the director thought was needed through the first three films had melted and it had become fun, warm and open.
So to all the haters that had a party after Breaking Dawn Part 2 left the cinemas, have a good time. Twilight's over, finally. Still, a pretty cool way to finish off.
