The Wind That Shakes The Barley (2006)

The Wind That Shakes The Barley is an intriguing historical film set in Ireland 1920. It is about the English oppression and cruelty to the Irish, subsequently causing a rebellion.After negotiating doesn't work the Irish have no choice but to resort to violence, forming guerrilla units to fight the 'Black an' Tans'.(A mercenary group recruited by the English to police Ireland, most of these were hardened warriors from WW1). The main character (played extremely well by Cillian Murphy) has to make a decision whether to stay and defend his country with his brother or go to London to fulfill his dreams of being a doctor. Overall I loved this film! The actors were brilliant and all had an authentic accent.(Ken Loach the director had in fact made sure all the actors were from the Irish county of Cork). This film sends your mind in all directions with it's 'how far will you go for your country' or 'should we push on further' kind of thinking and the large debate scene! To sum up this is a great film! Pen-ultimately it leaves you with a sense of patriotic will and well spent time!
