The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet (2013)

The Young and Prodigious T.S Spivet is about a ten year old boy who leaves his family's ranch in Montana where he lives with his cowboy father and scientist mother. T.S travels across the country aboard a train to receive an award at the Smithsonian Institute. At some points of the film, I felt that it didn't make sense. First of all, when the dog replied to T.S, I thought that it was unrealistic and it would have been a lot more effective if the dog had just stayed silent and T.S had continued to speak to it. Also, I didn't like how Layton's story was addressed so suddenly. It could have done with more build up and more reaction from the family. Finally, I didn't understand how T.S' dad appeared at the end. It was very random and, although you saw development in their relationship, I felt that it was unnecessary at that point in the film. However, I mostly enjoyed the film. I thought that the story line was original and unpredictable. Some parts of the film were funny, and other parts were slightly more serious and emotional. I would recommend this film to an audience of 12-16 year olds although it will only appeal to certain people. It is not the right film for somebody who wants to watch an easy film. You would need to pay quite a lot of attention throughout.
