Gently, but surely, the screen eases open into a soft background, the dreams of a young boy, Jiro - the manga child figure of WW1 and WW2 plane designer Jiro Horikoshi. The story wears on, never faltering, but developing a rather predictable storyline; the story of his love for a girl diagnosed with TB who hides the speed of her growing illness under make up and reassurances. However, when alerted by his younger sister to the perhaps falseness of her appearance, Jiro does all he can to help her. But working full hours designing planes, it might not be enough...
Despite the obviously amazing animation, script, acting and portrayal of the characters, I felt that this film was missing something. Who knows what: I may be speaking on behalf of the single feeling that speaks out among thousands that differ, but I got the feeling that sometimes the way in which events were shown was slightly comical, unsuited to the moment. Or maybe it is that moments have hope among them somewhere - a fantastic film.
