Steven Spielberg is my favourite director and has done some of my favourite films ever like E.T, Jurassic park, raiders of the lost ark, the tin tin movie and according to Empire the greatest film director of all time and Leo DiCaprio [titanic, Romeo and Juliet, [and lately, best picture nominee] the revenant] is one of my favourite actors so I am basically guaranteed to like this. Did you know that Leo has never been in a film that is a sequel or a prequel or a film that has had a sequel or a prequel made apart from his very first film [critters 3].
But anyway it is the [true, I KNOW RIGHT] story of a man called Frank Abagnale [Leo] who basically committed a few millions of pounds worth of fraud while FBI agent Carl [Tom Hanks, yeah he's in it too] is after him.
The film opens with something that won't really get without the context, but then after that it really starts with one of the best scenes of the movie where he convinces a whole class that he is a teacher and organizes a trip to France. It isn't really believable but is still brilliant. It really sets the tone for the comedy side of the movie which is so crucial to it. But don't be fooled by that first bit, as the movie is funny; it is certainly not a comedy.
For anyone who doesn't know Leo [and obviously lives in a cave] this might be the movie I would show them as he masters this character beautifully [and make him likeable] and makes you believe this really unbelievable thing and him and his Dad [who I think is played by Christopher Walken] really have such a great relationship and if there is one more thing I want from this film it is more scenes between the two of them.
And Spielberg did it again, it is a cliché to say it but he has such a great flare and the camera movement and cinematography are just breathtaking.
The only complaints I have is that around the middle 40 minutes the scenes between Carl and Frank do get a little repetitive and there is this really out of place scene from later on in the movie [the plane scene] cut and paste into the middle of the film and it is slightly biased to the more positive side of Abagnale as I think he is still alive.
The score by John Williams is one of his more subtle works but it is still a very iconic piece of music.
To conclude a brilliant film, 5 stars out of five, it might even make my top 10 films of all time. and I'm not the only one as it has 96% [as of January 2016] on rotten tomatoes so I urge you to watch it, I am certainly now going to buy it on blu-ray now and watch it at least another 2 times.
