Anchorman (2004)

My film club can become very strange when it comes to watching films in their original order. What I mean by that is, we will end up watching the sequel first then watch the original film of that series later. Anyway, without further wait let’s get on with the review. The film is set in 1974 where Ron Burgundy is the famous anchorman for a local San Diego television station, KVWN of channel 4. Ron may be the lead anchor man, but that doesn’t mean he has to work on his own. By his side are his best and most loyal friends, not to mention news team for KVWN. Brian Fantana, the lead field reporter, "Champ" Kind, the sports champion of the group and then finally there’s Brick Tamland who’s…. I’ll just say that he’s intellectually disabled. He’s also the chief meteorologist of the news team. Together they live like Gods among mortals reporting the news, having a few good laughs and above all, cherishing the love that the people of San Diego have for them. Things seem to be going well for the team, until Station director Ed Harken informs the team that they have been forced to hire a Veronica Corningstone, a woman! From here on out Ron, Brian, Champ and Brick will wage war with Veronica with the sole intension of keeping the anchorman in power of the news. However the life of an anchorman is never easy, and with bears to fight and other news teams literally giving a "hand", have the team finally met their match? "Well, that escalated quickly" - Ron Burgundy, Anchorman. I won't lie I quite enjoyed the film, I found it an enjoyable experience and above all it had a very good and funny storyline to it. The main protagonists and the world itself felt like a combination of both live action and a wacky cartoon all rolled up into the film that is anchorman. There is a fight scene in this film where the KVWN team, and, a number of other news teams get involved in which I found very amusing, especially how Brick was the one holding a hand held grenade. It is official; never leave that man with dangerous or explosive weaponry. However, I felt that the ending was a bit stale and that it dragged on for a few minutes. I will not go into detail about why I think it was stale as firstly, you’ll have to watch the film yourself in order to come to your own conclusions and secondly, I don’t know how I could have done it better. Since I have seen the second Anchorman film it allows me to compare them both and say which I believe was better, again like I said, I like both of them but I have to say that Anchorman 2 really got me more involved in what was going on than Anchorman. Not to mention the BBC is in the fight scene of Anchorman 2 so I guess I’m a bit one sided but that’s beside the point. Overall, I enjoyed the film and I hope you go and watch it.
