Whiplash is a 2014 drama directed by Damien Chazelle, and staring such talents as Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons. The film follows Teller’s character Andrew, an aspiring drummer, as he attempts to gain a place in his schools Jazz band. Although the premise may sound bland, monotone and only enjoyable for a certain niche audience, Chazelle does well to captivate the audiences attention and turn this into a thrilling drama that grips the audience through out the whole 102 minutes. Andrew a promising young drummer, enrolls at a high intensity, cut-throat music conservatory where he aims to fulfill his dreams of becoming a world famous musician. The only thing standing between him and his dream is his sociopathic mentor Fletcher, played by J.K. Simmons. Despite the film having the potential to fall down the dangerous road of a musical, Damien Chazelle, is able to keep the audience glued to the screen. As well as a gripping story line, the film features some highly impressive cinematography; some very inventive close ups and other camera angles are paired beautifully with a epic soundtrack. I have given this film a 5 out of 5, this is due to the fact that going into this film I was judgmental, and prepared to face a boring 102 minutes of a hobby I am not slightly captivated by, however the films ability to maintain my attention, and turn the predicted genre of this film (slow boring musical drama) onto its head is outstanding to say the least.
