Girlhood Review Girlhood (Directed by Céline Sciamma) Is a film set in modern times based on a realistic story, It starts off by the character Marieme (Played by Karidja Touré) who is denied to move on with her education due to bad grades and meets a gang of girls called Lady, (Played by Assa Sylla), Adiatou (Played by Lindsay Karamoh) and Fily (Played by Marietou Toure). Marieme joins the girls gang lead by Lady which they end up just having fun but end up mostly in fights with other girl gangs, While trying to have a good time with the girls Marieme gets in trouble with her abusive brother which she has to return home to look after her younger sisters to make sure they are ok. At the same time, Marieme’s love interest Ismael (Played by Idrissa Diabate) tries to engage on Marieme sexually but is pulled apart by her brother who is best friends with him. After awhile of being with the girls there is a change in Marieme who is no longer quiet but more aggressive and ends up getting into even more trouble along with being outcasted by her brother for having sex with his best friend, as she tries to live another life as a drug dealer. The story again is following a more realistic approach instead of fictional stories it takes a more serious tone as you can clearly see Marieme’s change along with her witnessing her mistake as she sees her sister going down the same path as her. It's even more heartbreaking when Marieme tries to return home to her sisters after being a few years apart as Marieme now works as a drug dealer but has to do it incognito by disguising her appearance, only before she goes through the door to see them she runs off in the opposite direction, as it being realistic we never know where the film leads along with it suddenly coming to a sad conclusion after Marieme regrets her life choices. I highly recommend this film as it's a real eye-opener as it also gives the impression that not only boys can go down a rough path thanks to gangs but also girls as affected as well and along with them being exploited with other things, the cinematography is mainly more interesting during the few fight scenes the movie has as its constantly jumping and bobbing to capture all the action.
