Brokeback Mountain is an a drama set in the mid-to-late 20th century that focuses on two cowboys and their secret homosexual relationship. The characters of Ennis and Jack, played by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal respectively, are incredibly in love with each other, but cannot be together because of the social limitations.
Gyllenhaal and Ledger give terrific performances and they portray the characters with such a level of maturity that they are well deserving of their Oscar nominations. Michelle Williams also puts in a terrific performance as the wife of Ennis, who finds out about Ennis' guilty pleasure.
I believe that the social importance of this film, as a lot of countries still look down upon homosexuality, and in some places gay people are executed. Ang Lee's direction is very strong, with such beautiful landscape shots and good editing.
I would give this 4 stars, as it is a very strong film, but i don't believe i connected to it on an emotional level.
