Last week I watched Rango. I had not seen this film before, but I found it very funny. As soon as the first joke appeared I was laughing through the entire film. I was very impressed by the animation, which created an incredibly realistic visual effect. Each character took the form of a different, but easily identifiable, animal. It also helped me to understand the location of the town, Dirt. The characters were very traditional. Rango (Johnny Depp) played the chameleon, stereotypical hero and idolised legend of the south, who has left his mistakes halfway through and returns at the climax for the epic showdown. Beans (Isla Fisher) played the Damsel in Distress type character. Tortoise John (Ned Beatty) was the films main antagonist who takes charge as the Mayor of Dirt, in cahoots with a dangerous gang. Rattlesnake Jake (Bill Nighy) was the secondary villain/ bumbling sidekick who terrorised dirt with his pistol duelling skills and frightening visage. Then Roadkill (Alfred Molina) resembled an elder wise figure to guide the protagonist to their journey. I appreciated the resemblance of a historic Melodrama type genre. I also enjoyed the jokes constantly swapping from jokes for the kids, jokes for the parents. Then the references, especially the Flight of the Falcories, was incredibly fun for me to recognise.
