Alike the title, I personally had great expectations for the 2013 remake of Baz Luhrmann's 'The Great Gatsby'. A star studded movie based on a Hollywood classic left me with the idea that this film would be filled with romance, drama and mystery-which I can reveal it was!
During 'The Great Gatsby', we watch Nick Carraway, played by Tobey Maguire, arrive in New York in the roaring twenties in search of the American dream. We follow him in a series of events whilst he narrates, until he comes across the mysterious, aloof character of Jay Gatsby (Leonardo Dicaprio) when the film begins to focus on him and his love affair with Daisy (Carey Mulligan). This film takes you on an adventure presenting the upper class 1920s American life, the era of jazz and flappers perfectly being portrayed. To watch this motion picture pulls you in with a fast attention capturing pace yet follow able plot-creating an almost perfect feature for all ages, educating and entertaining.
I absolutely adored this movie and urge you to see it! I loved the scenery during this film and focus on characters emotions, making you feel a part of the film. The only fault with 'The Great Gatsby' is the disappointing twist, I felt it brought the mood down, although the un-happy ending made it unique to other movies, making it more realistic and relatable, as happy endings are associated with children's fairy tales.
My favourite scene without a doubt is near the beginning when Leonardo Dicaprio reveals he is the eminent Jay Gatsby. At the same moment the mystery and suspense is met with stunning fireworks, as he raises a glass of champagne, implying his presence is a celebration, as we learn it's rare. This scene is memorable as the shot freezes on an eye-catching view of the brilliant party and the vibrant fireworks, not to mention Leonardo Dicaprio!
I would definitely recommend this film as I feel it's suitable for a range of ages. As a 16 year old watching with my 45 year old mother, 67 year old grandmother and 93 year old great grandmother, bearing in mind we all loved it, I think it's safe to say that opinion is correct to say the least! This movie is an excellent representation of a film based on historical events yet there's never a dull moment, keeping any audience intrigued and on the edge of their seats.
With comparing in mind to other movies, I'd have to associate 'The Great Gatsby' to films such as the 'Titanic', not only both feature Leonardo Dicaprio, but are focused on the idea of a tragic love story. Also alike this would be Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, showing the lengths people will go to for love. I believe if you are a fan of these films- 'The Great Gatsby' is just for you!
I hope my review comes in helpful and you love this amazing movie just as much as I do! The film should be sure to leave you in awe for days!
