Queen of Katwe
Madina Nalawanga plays the main role as Phiona in the 2017 movie ‘Queen of Katwe’ Of course, there are a lot more people, but I’ll get onto that later, and this movie is about a girl, twelve years of age who comes from the slums in Katwe Kampala, Uganda who uses chess to escape the slums. If you like beautiful scenery and great realistic representation, you’re going to love this movie!
Also laced with humour, the movie received positive feedback, with The Guardian rating it 4/5 and 93% of people liking it. Now, the movie is rated PG, but I mean, if you can cope with pregnancy and a little bit of abuse guess it’s fine? Anyway, getting more into depth with this Disney film, she goes into a chess club, and learns how to play, she quickly realises that she’s really good at the game, going on to world championships.
One thing which I really like is that they go really into detail with the story, showcasing even the smallest things, like that man who asks Phiona how her life is every day, and changing the scene every time it comes again. I also like that they really showcase the reality of places like Katwe etc. and the struggles people go through. I also think that they really catch your emotions with this movie, with very heart warming and heart breaking moments, but they it make up with the funny moments.
Even though I am a fan, there is something which I don’t like such as: lighting. Sometimes, it just isn’t good, and I’m not able to see it that well, but that’s all!
Overall, it’s an amazing film which I recommend watching, it helped me open my eyes a lot more and think twice about people, and I hope it does the same to you.
