The romantic comedy-drama ‘Punch-Drunk Love’ was definitely in my top ten watches of the year. This breathtakingly eccentric Paul Thomas Anderson feature centres around the psychologically uneasy Barry Egan, played by Adam Sandler, and follows the comical start of his new relationship with Lena Leonard as well as his diverting search for solace and stability. Not only was there a captivating storyline, but I was able to watch the movie on 35mm film, which was a first for me.
Throughout this febrile love story Anderson explores the theme of social anxiety. I have to admit I’m not a fan of Sandler, and so was startled by his stellar performance as he successfully taps into the absurd, eclectic tones of his character. His natural fluency with co-star Watson perfectly portrays the typical awkwardness of the first stages of a relationship and certainly creates some cringeworthy moments!
Anderson’s consummate, unique style of filming enhances Egan’s severe anxiety. From close-ups to panning shots, Anderson takes the audience on an ever-shifting emotional journey, leaving me quite bewildered at the end of the film! Anderson’s artistic mindset was shown through the emblematic frames of colour scattered throughout the feature. This aspect added a sense of individuality and quirkiness to the piece, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
The one aspect of the film that stood out to me was the use of frenetic sound. I felt that it helped to set up this sense of insanity and worry while adding a zealous sense of comedy. For me, the music was beautifully incongruous with the action, making the film even more idiosyncratic.
Going into the cinema, knowing the film was showing on 35mm, I was rather dubious as to what my reaction would be. I am used to high definition, elaborately furnished features and so was unsure whether the quality would effect my judgment. However, after watching this masterpiece, this form of showing a movie suddenly became fascinating to me. It fabricated an authentic, truthful picture and completely perfected my experience. Also, the cinematic experience allowed me to immerse myself in the action and devoutly watch this adventurous yet wondrously strange masterpiece.
I would love to read other takes on the film and so encourage anyone who is passionate to share some of your opinions on the film, even if you hated it! The film in its entirety was funny and original and I would definitely recommend it to virtually anyone with a sense of humour.
