Tangled (2010)

Tangled is a well thought out, well animated and well produced adaption of ‘Rapunzel’. It includes a dry sense of humour, an underlying darkness and a realistic love story.

The love between Mother Gothel (Donna Murphy) and Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) is twisted; abusive in ways that many fail to notice. The love between Rapunzel and Flynn Rider (Zachary Levi) is one that many viewers aspire to have as it is a beautiful relationship to watch unfold.

In an attempt to escape Mother Gothel and her bid for the power provided by Rapunzel’s hair, the relationship develops at a realistic pace. As they go across the kingdom, they fall in love. First, they hold animosity towards each other, leaving them cold and mere acquaintances. They visit a pub, the snuggly duckling, and their views on eachother thaw and they perform a musical number with the patrons of the pub. A bonding moment between the two takes place in the town centre of the kingdom. They become very fond of one another at that moment and it is obvious for all the people watching the film to see.

The moment when they fully fall in love is extremely romantic, taking place in the middle of a lake. Unfortunately, Flynn and Rapunzel are both deceived and have dangers to face separately before being reunited. One of the final scenes is heart-wrenching. To save eachother they face great pain, and the loss of parts of themselves. Eventually, they are relieved of their pain and, as in all Disney films, they live happily ever after.

The soundtrack is catchy, the film is great and the watch is well worth the time. If you are a fan of Disney, and a hopeless romantic, then Tangled is a perfect family film for all.
