‘Wayne’s World’ is an stupid funny film, that makes you as an audience think ‘how was this pitched and made’.
A big screen spin-off of the "Saturday Night Live" skit. Rob Lowe plays a producer that wants to take the public access "Wayne's World" to the world of commercial television. Wayne (Mike Myers) and Garth (Dana Carvey) battle to save their show and Wayne's girlfriend from Lowe.
When producing the film, Mike Myers wanted Wayne's World to be about a local cable access show because hosting one was a lifelong dream of his, and in 1992, he explained that he never had one in real life because he "couldn't get around to filling out the forms and stuff”, which instantly gives the film a whole new personal feeling for this was Myers way of fulfilling his dream. Even though the film is set in suburban Aurora, Illinois, no parts of the film were actually shot there and back in 1992, the year of the films release, Myers said he had never been to Aurora, but "liked the sound of the word." After some research, he also thought Aurora's demographics were similar to his hometown of Scarborough, Ontario. However, the city of Aurora's official website has a hunch that some scenes were actually filmed there, which gives the film a little mystery for the audience to see if they can pinpoint scenes that may really have been filmed in Aurora.Myers originally intended for the character of Wayne Campbell to be introduced on Canadian TV and after joining the cast of ‘Saturday Night Live’ in 1989, he presented the character to American audiences and the sketch was a hit.Paramount pictures, an american film studio based in Hollywood, was initially on the fence about backing the film, however The sketch did well on SNL and the film grossed over $180 million on opening weekend, but Myers has said the first reaction was a note from the studio saying they didn't fully understand the concept.
As a producer there are certain things that you can be flexible with but not Michael Myers, who has said on several occasions that he would have left the film entirely had "Bohemian Rhapsody" not been included. At the time the film was made ‘Guns ‘n’ Roses’ were extremely popular and not Queen, so the producers wanted to put their song in the film however Myers insisted that the public needed to be re-introduced to Queen's masterpiece and thanks to the iconic headbanging scene, Queen experienced a mainstream comeback and according to Vanity Fair, "Bohemian Rhapsody" shot back up to No. 2 on the charts following the release of the film. Even though the car headbanging scene was extremely popular, Myers didn't think the headbanging scene was funny at all, Director Penelope Spheeris has said she had to "negotiate" with the actor, and after making him do it over and over again, he was apparently very upset with her. Usually to make a good film the actors, producers, directors and everyone behind the screen need to get along, however, Myers and director Penelope Spheeris did not get along, but have since reportedly made up since then. Spheeris has said, "We're all getting too old to be pissed." In my personal opinion i believe the film is ok but is only funny in how stupid it is , however reportedly during in filming, Rob Lowe has said he discovered his "hitherto untapped gift for comedy" after meeting Mike Myers and after his comedic success in Wayne's World, Myers also brought him on to be a part of two Austin Powers films.
Paramount Pictures created a trailer for the film that only appeared before showings of 1991's The Addams Family, which was a strange scheduling, however in 1992 the president of Paramount said he saw potential for a crossover trailer since both films had been inspired by TV shows. Myers said the preview "got people talking" about the film. When ‘Wayne’s World’, was being recorded Myers said that it was all a blur because at the same time, he was going through personal problems to do with his father's health. ("I remember finishing the film, then I remember my dad dying," he said in an interview in 2013, which instantaneously gives the film a more morbid feeling, some fans have said that if you look closely at his acting you can see moments when Myers looks concerned or upset, revealing his real emotions at time of the filming. For most director, when their film is a success like ‘Wayne’ World’, they have many more opportunities for films, however Spheeris had a difficult time getting hired to direct anything that wasn't a comedy film after ‘Wayne's World’ was released and ended up directing ‘Little Rascals’ and ‘The Beverly Hillbillies’ following the success of ‘Wayne's World.’
After watching the film, I have an odd opinion on the film, I can see how it was popular with its humour, however it just wasn't my type of film, however if you are the type of person who enjoys idiotic humour, comedy references, you enjoy Bohemian Rhapsody or you are a fan of Michael Myers, then I would recommend this film. Since my opinion is waived on this film, I will have to give it a solid 3 stars.
