A Single Man (2009)

Tom Fords 2009 film ‘A Single Man’ is a cinematic masterpiece filled to the brim with raw emotion and heartache that shows the tragically beautiful life of George Falconer (Colin Firth) as he contemplates suicide following the death of his boyfriend. Throughout the film we get to see the complex relationships he has with the people around him and witness the shocking mistreatment of homosexuals in the 1960s. The use of sound in this film really helps to create the melancholy atmosphere that envelopes the audience, which evokes an overwhelming sense of sympathy for and pain on behalf of George as we see the injustices he faces and subsequent pain he suffers. The acting was also excellent in this film, with Colin Firth and Julianne Moore (who plays Charley) portraying characters with so many different levels and complexities that they have created that brings the characters to life, making the story feel all the more real and therefore heart breaking.
