A drama set in 1912 London that tracks the inspirational and heartbreaking true story of the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement, the Suffragettes.
Maud Watts (Carey Mulligan) is a working mother drawn into fighting for women’s rights. After being fired from her job working in a laundry factory she begins to demand equality. She and her friends become fighters in an early feminist movement led by Mrs Pankhurst (Meryl Streep).
After learning about his wife’s new activist role her husband, Sonny Watts (Ben Wishaw) throws her out of the house and she’s banned from seeing her only son. However, the Suffragette sisterhood rallies round to support her and together they fight to be heard.
This is not the kind of genre I would usually watch however I enjoyed watching this film as it was a real eye-opener to the history of the suffragettes and how hard they had to fight for our rights, how they risked their lives to make sure that we were heard. Watching this gripping tale made me realize exactly the extent they had to go to fight for their power.
Emmeline Pankhurst: ‘Never underestimate the power we women have to define our destiny.’
I would strongly advise people to watch this film to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the suffragettes’ powerful work and sacrifices, their heroic story should be known to everyone.
