An Amazing Film Brilliant for Older Children

5 stars

Zootropolis, (or Zootopia if you live in the US) in my opinion is a fantastic film. Not only is it a fun and exciting film to watch, but it also highlights issues in society which are extremely relevant today.

The animated film is about a young rabbit who travels to the city away from her family in the rural countryside to live her dream as a police officer. She is met with mild sexism and the film shows how she overcomes this whilst making strong friendships, solving interesting mysteries and fights crime in an exciting and action-packed way.

The film also highlights societal issues, the film targets systemic racism in a way which is understandable for not just mature children, but younger children too. In addition, the film teaches children (in particular girls) to have big dreams and to not give up when things get tough, and it teaches girls and boys alike to overcome prejudice and sexism. A couple scenes could be slightly disturbing for younger children though and there are some mild jump scares although nothing bad for a child over 8 I would say. However if a parent or guardian is around, they can simply cover the eyes of the children as it is quite obvious when a scary bit is coming up!

The plot is another one of my favourite parts of the film. It is full of twists and turns and humour. It explores the many different parts of Zootropolis (the city it is set in) and every part of the film is exciting and well-thought out.

Overall I think this film is brilliant and a fantastic choice for children older than 8 (or a child watching it with a parent or guardian). It is full of fun, mystery and teaches your child how to be a good person. I would definitely recommend it. It is my favourite animated film and the ending is very satisfying!
