Journey To The Centre Of The Earth (1959)

This is a fantasy Disney film from the fifties. I was quite surprised by how good the cinematography was because this was an old movie. This historical adventure was one of the most mysterious movies I have ever seen, which makes it one of my favourite films(nearly all of the film club movies become my favourites). I really liked this feature film because one of the reasons being the professor in the movie was James Mason and I say this because he was also captain Nemo in 20,000 leagues under the sea and so I guess whoever made this movie liked him a lot for Jules Verne stories.

This is about a professor called Sir Oliver and a poor student called Alec who gives him a rock but not just any rock, there is a message inside and it is from an explorer who went on an expedition to the centre of the earth but he never came back. Alec and the professor decide to follow his tracks. On the way they take along a widowed woman, an Icelander guide and even a duck!

My favourite part was when the monsters came out. About how they did the monsters: on one of the monster scenes, Alec and the Professor were on an UNDERGROUND BEACH??? This is one of the parts that did not seem right. After the movie I heard they used real lizards and somehow made them look bigger to make the appearance of the creatures.

So watch out for the monsters!

Gertrude the duck was probably my favourite character. She was one of those unlikely pets in movies that somehow always seem to know the way.

My favourite line was when Antagonist says: “I don't sleep, I hate those little slices of death” I found that really funny!

The ending wasn't that satisfying to me I don't want to spoil it, but something sad happens.

But here is something funny! Alec kept taking his shirt off. I call it “doing a Kirk Douglas thing” like in 20,000 leagues under the sea! Perhaps it was something they did in 1950's movies.

I would give this film...wait for it...5 out of 5 stars! I know it is not really my kind of film (it is old) but if you like adventure films you can't scroll past this film on your TV.
