Divergent (2014)

This 2014 action and adventure based on the divergent series by Veronica Roth, follows the story of Beatrice (Shailene Woodley) as she goes through choosing there factions. There are 5 factions, there qualities are: selflessness, kindness, honesty, bravery and smarts. I think it’s very cool how they separated the factions are differentiated by clothing and how you see them act. In a war-torn world she was born into being selfless (abnegation) and we see her go through the ‘test’ but only to find out that she’s what they call divergent which is someone who fits into none of the factions but fits into them all, having a decision she chooses brave (dauntless) and we see how she tries to fit in there without anyone finding out..

This plot line is very clever as it introduces several potential sequels as well as a glimpse of a dystopian life beyond our understanding where you are supposed to fit into one category and if not you are either worthless or a threat. I like the elements of danger and risk they have to go through to become a part of their chosen faction. I like how the scenes represent the darkness not only of what’s happening but their society and the future they face. I would recommend this film because it’s one of the key groups of dystopian novels that have been made into films and its a very good watch.
