Psycho (1960) is an incredible film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring the highly skilled Anthony Perkins and Janet Leigh. This black and White movie is often considered one of the greatest films of all time and was initially one of the first slasher films to ever hit the big screens. Psycho, however, also generated interest due to the film’s ability to break free from the movie laws and restrictions through its demonstration of violence, deviant behavior and sexuality.
The movie begins by introducing us to the main protagonist Marion and Sam, her love interest, however, we learn that they cannot be together due to Sam’s previous divorce. Once Marion says goodbye to Sam as he leaves for his hometown, she makes her way to the real estate company she works for. At work Marion is given $40,000 by her boss and is instructed to head to the bank and deposit the money for the company. Marion, however, takes the money and a packed bag and flees town to start a new life.
Now a wanted criminal, Marion needs to act quickly, escaping her old life, while dodging police questions and potential susceptibility. While on the run, during harsh weather, Marion finds a motel on the side of a forgotten highway, where she plans to stay the night. Here she meets Norman Bates, an introverted and awkward individual who, with his mother, runs the motel. After Norman and Marion share some dinner together, the movie takes a dark and twisted turn as we learn that the Bates Motel is not all that it seems...
Overall, Psycho is a fascinating movie, with incredible cinematography, acting and plot twists, however, the one thing that makes Psycho so renowned is the revolutionary soundtrack which creates tension and fear for the audience. Although Psycho is an old film, it is still an all-time favorite of many and an incredible horror movie. I would give Psycho a 3/5/.
