So Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
Wep I'm reviewing a Halloween movie on November.
Who cares!
Anyways, I've finally now saw this movie. I do have to say that it's the better movie from 2024. Man just watching this is a breath of fresh compare to the useless garbage remakes that Timmy flushed (away) in the Disney factory. However, I can't say its completely a return to form and WARNING: This review contains SPOILERS, so be scared or something!
But without a further-a-do lets get over it:
The good: The highlight for me is the aesthetic and this movie gets huge points for that. Finally it feels like a movie made from Tim Burton in a modern style, the sets looks awesome and screams out Tim Burton style. The presentation is great. Also Beetlejuice himself is more involved in the plot and that guy caries this movie. Michael Keaton performance is good, he perfectly captures the charismatic personality so well.
I like the new characters, my favourite is Willem Dafoe as the cheif. The whole gag that he constantly not tries to take things as an action prop because he's career is playing an action movie.
The animation is also pretty good, it capture the stop motion style and I adore how Charles got eaten by a shark. It has so much stop motion to it and the sandworm is really good.
I love the neet details, like the train subway and I adore the way they choose it. They choose a Sweden Metro train from around the 1960s and it's based on a real life event of the exact train (yes, you hear me right its a ghost train). I would recommend to watch Train of Thoughts on he's video called "Stockholm's scary subway - Silverpilen & Kymlinge". It's really interesting and informative.
So I really appreciated that (special interests people of trains like me).
The problems: Okay, my biggest gripe with the movie is the plot. There is 3 plotlines going on the same time and unfortunately I don't think its well executed. It took me 30mins in the movie to understand what the hell is going on.
The first is Beetlejuice love interest Delores. I give the movie that, it contribute the lore of Beetlejuice and it explains why he wants to married Lydia. But she barely do anything besides going around and murder Beetlejuice that just appear in the final act and it's very underwhelming and she's just there. She exist, just remove her and it wouldn't matter to the story. Its very played out, forced and shoehorned into the story.
The other plot is the Jenna relationship, basically she is to the boy who happens to be a ghost amd manipulate her soul so be finally become human again. This is such a filler character arc, Jenna just learns not to trust strangers. Wow! Never seen that before!
The Real plot is Lydia going back to the ghost house and meeting Beetlejuice to save her daughter. Also her boyfriend Derek is secretly a manipulater.
"Derek, your a selfish jerk." But the whole YouTube stuff isn't that funny but at least it's not in your face as most other movies, I'll give it that.
Honestly I wish they Jenna plot should have been the main one and Lydia and Beetlejuice should have been the side plot.
The beef I had with the movie is everyone is doing something but it all feels like filler. It's not really too confusing but it's more like, why is this is in the plot. There is just lack of motivation, there characters who are killed off or just completely nonexistent. The first has a simple plot so it doesn't really lines up that well.
Final Thoughts: So was Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Necessary? Both Yes and No.
It might sounds like I described it as an painfully average movie but the thing is, I enjoyed it. The comedy is funny and it's not the worst sequel out there (trust me, I've seen way worse then this). It's that, its a messy. More like "An Enjoyable Mess". "An Okay Mess".
It's comparable to fast food, sure you feel good but after a few months you started to forget it and that is Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. You wouldn't get a bad time with this, in fact if like the first one then your going to like this aswell just as fine. But there's to much problems from being one of the greats.
Its welcoming but underwhelming to describe this movie.
Rest In Piece Bob, you just exist.
