So Klaus.
Its a movie that I've haven't seen for years and it was these movies where it came and went. It came with critical acclaimed Netflix movie that got an Oscar nomination. Then after, people just moved on.
I get its movies or any piece of media have one side of the audience just move on the next big thing until their attention spam died down, but I meant was in more in a sense of less impact on the viewer which I find it unfortunate that the bigger competition gets every trophy and steal the srink ray, while the less known companies gets Absolutely Nothing!
So today I thought it would be nice to look back a less known movie, So without a further-a-do let's get into it:
The animation is peak: Honestly right off or my biggest positive for me is the animation. Its actually 2D that is drawn above on the CGI is super creative and very artisitic (what I'm saying that this movie's 2D animation mimics the 3D animation despite being 2D). The animation express in different ways of the usage of colour, like Klaus' is very lively for example. Everything is spotless and this should be the animation Disney should have done instead of their recent bland CGI that fits every other CGI movie.
The characters: I love them all, there's no weaklinks for me and I love them all. Both of their design and quirks.
Jesper is a great protagonist, I love he become less selfish and selfless of the joy he unironicallt brings to everyone in Smeerenburg as the movie progress. I also didn't know he's voice actor is not David Spade, he's voiced by Jason Schwartzman. Yes he also does The Spot. Wait a minute! So does this mean Jesper works with KingPin?! Guys I have a theory-
Anyways the reason I brought up David Spade is because also voice Kuzco. Both are actually simliar from being jerkish to redeemable but I feel like Jesper is better because he let off the emtional beats and play out a bit better.
My boy J.K Simmons as Klaus is great, I didn't realised he is voiced Klaus and he executed perfectly. He gives sombre like personalitiy at the start when Klaus first meet Jesper and I adore how the whole Christmas tradition came to be as the movie goes on. I love he moved on to bring the joy to the world as he's wife wants and that reminds him way he did this meaning and the ending where Jesper knows he died to be with her but Jesper is always there for him years after hits hard.
In fact the emtional beats didn't need to hit like a train.
I love Alva, she went from a paying person for desperate for money after Jesper influnce the children to be nice make Alva discover her passion again as she always wants to be is all rapped up nicely. The movie perfectly round up the characters in very cleaver ways and not beating you in the head and expect you like them.
I adore that Smeerenburg (other then its based on a real life place on Norway that used to host whales, nice representation here) but the way the movie made them from selfish cults to kind wise citizen is super heart warming. In fact the message of spreading kindness draws inspiration for people is great and done brilliantly.
My only problem with the movie is the "All Is Lost" moment and "I'm not talking to you" trope. Again tropes isn't always bad when executed well but not here, this what keeps it away from being a Christmas Classic for me. Its forced but thankfully doesn't last too long.
Final Thoughts: So yeah Klaus is a good movie and I highly recommended to watch it on this Christmas or the year after, then the next year, then the next decade, then the next centry-
Its such a heart felt compelling movie that I've never seen any other studio done before and I really want more movies like this, not this Disney. This is not the way. Its time to stop!
So that's everything I got to say and I want to wish you all a Merry Christmas!
HO-HO-HO!
