Dog Man (2024)

In 2015, Dav Pilkey finish off with his last 13th novel Captain Underpants and the Sensational Saga of Sir Stinks-A-Lot.

So after that year, because of a illustrated novel called Bone (by Jeff Smith in 2005) influnce Scholastic and other comic creators to make their comic for a comapny strictly novel base. This leads to other book creators which (in 2016) being Dav Pilkey with his book called Dog Man.

If you didn't know about Dog Man. Dog Man is a book serise that spawn 12 books, a video game and today's review The Movie.

Its directed by Peter Hastings is the same guy who directed the Captain Underpants Tv show in Netflix. This peaks my interest and I'm also a Dav Pilkey and read two of the books and I did enjoy it.

But before we go any further: This Review will contain SPOILERS, so take this as you will. Got that? Now who else wants to play Cheif? Good.

So without a further-a-do let's get into it:

The Animation is spotless: To start off, the animation is perfect. For a 40 Million budget movie, it perfectly translate the core art style from Dav Pilkey. Kind of slightly imperfect and beautiful style. I love the words add on. It add on so much personality to this world, like when Dog Man say: "Oooooooooooooooo". The words are also intereact to the other characters like when Petey stracth the Supa word.

I also love the little details, like when Petey lose one of his whisker's (two on his left cheek) it reminds to the entire film. Little details like this, the animators didn't have to includ it but they did.

The referneces is done well: This is how you make a good adapated movie. It's one of these great film that you don't have to go to read the books to get this movie. Not everyone would appericate the details but for us Dav Pilkey fans we love it. It's done in a very coherent and natural way that it doesn't feel forced.

It's not in your face or shoving into your throat and its thankfully one of these films that doesn't have that. That many other films fails to try.

The characters: I got to say.

The writers done a perfect job, everyone is on point and so is the casting as well. I did expect Pete Davidson do so well with Petey. He perfectly capture his evil and quick temper personality.

Lil Rel Howery as Cheif, Lucas Hpokins as Lil Petey and Isla Fisher as Sarah Hatoff all great respectfully.

I'm so glad that they make Dog Man a silent character. It's makes the character more enduring and relatable instead of a generic Famous Hollywood Clelebrity.

The characters: The thing about this movie that the books didn't do. They make the characters more sympathic.

Dog Man as first introduced as a guy and his dog as they failed to defused the bomb. They blow up but as the Dog's head is intact and so is his owner's body. The nurse decided to mix them together and so Dog Man is born. You might think the whole movie is just Dogman throwing Petey to jail, right?

Not exactly. After that montage it turns out that his wife left him because he's just a freak, he is just a frankenstein monster. He is also a good dog, it's just that he has behaviours as a dog do, like chasing squirrels. This also annoyed the Cheif that he is getting the attention and making him look surprior and thus why Cheif is annoyed at Dog Man at first but as the movie goes on they ended up having a bon friendship.

Petey is also a great villain. He isn't evil for the sake of it, his own dad is a bad parent and abandond. When Lil Petey bring him back, he still does not care about his child. Thus why Petey is evil and cause him to get an quick temper attuidude to his butler because he is so focus on taking down on Dog Man.

As Petey acidently didn't wait for 18 years for his cloning machine, he ended up like his father. He is a bad parent and wants to get rid of Lil Petey but as Dog Man finds Lil Petey he's a great friend for him and makes him live on (side note the montage of Dog Man and Lil Petey is great and they also changed the background to make it look Autumn, it makes the movie feel more alive).

As Lil Petey tells about Petey that he dosen't have to be isloated to make him feel better. There is a theme of abandonment and how to health isloations. At the end, Petey understands that history will not be repeated, he joins Dog Man to save Lil Petey from Flippy the Fish who also have an abandon story. At the end Petey finally learn to love himself and it's shockingly wholsesome. It lets the emtional moments beat and god the ending hits hard.

Also the fight scene against the mail mech vs Buildings is pretty bad A.

Final Thoughts: As you can already tell, I love this movie but I did have a 2 Nit picks (remember these are small things going over my head that doesn't harm the movie by any means).

1: I do think the side plot of Cheif and Mayor comes out of nowhere and cane easily changed over that it doesn't effect the movie.

2: I do think the third act goes a little too long but it's not really a big issue.

Its not completely on power with the Captain Underpants movie but its still great none or less. It's made from love and passion that people care about the books. They also have an art book which I enjoy reading hof how it was made of concept arts and is really cooll to see.
